…. Barack Obama threw off their gloves and attacked each other for their suspicious and scandalous ties. And you know what? They were both right!
Here’s a story this week that makes my point with respect to Hillary:
According to the Wall Street Journal: “Former President Clinton stands to reap around $20 million — and will sever a politically sensitive partnership tie to Dubai — by ending his high-profile business relationship with the investment firm of billionaire friend Ron Burkle. Mr. Clinton is negotiating to end his relationship with Mr. Burkle’s Yucaipa Cos. as part of a broader effort to protect the presidential campaign of his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, from potential conflicts of interest.”
It’s a little late to worry about conflicts of interest, don’t you think?
Hillary has served in the Senate during Bill Clinton’s tenure with Yucaipa, which began in 2002, all the while in a position to vote on issues that could impact Burkle’s (and, through Bill, Hillary’s) empire. Bill Clinton voiced no concern about a potential conflict of interest when he was handed a large stake in Yucaipa with no risk and very little work required. Now he can just collect the checks.
Moreover, this $20 million payoff does nothing to eliminate the conflict of interest. In fact, it makes it worse. Presumably, since Hillary Clinton shares a bank account with former President Clinton, they can use the money to fund her candidacy for president, if she so chose. Overall, Burkle has contributed large amounts of cash to the Clintons’ campaigns, their legal defense fund, and to the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Arkansas. The question is, and has always been, what will Ron Burkle get in return for his generosity to the Clintons? Especially if Hillary wins the presidency.
Now Obama, for his part, was slammed for ties to indicted political fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko, or as Hillary called him, “a slumlord.” This is an apt description. Rezko owned dozens of low-income housing structures beset by code violations and 11 of them were in Obama’s state senate district. Some of these buildings had no heat in the dead of winter. Rezko, who received millions in government grants to rehab the buildings, said he had no money to repair them. He did, however, have enough money to fund Obama’s campaigns. (You will also recall that Obama was involved in a suspicious land deal with Rezko. I’ve written about that extensively in this space.) In fact, Obama sought to return (to charity) more Rezko money when it was revealed by the Chicago Sun-Times that Obama was referenced in court documents as benefiting from illegal Rezko contributions.
(By the way, a photo surfaced today that suggests Hillary may have her own Rezko scandal to worry about. Check it out here.)
So the Clintons reap millions as a result of partnering with a foreign government and Barack is in deep with an indicted businessman. These are troubling times for those of us concerned about pubic corruption.
Hillary Records Release Spreads Like Wildfire
Back to Hillary for a moment…
Judicial Watch touched off bit of a media frenzy last week when we released some new records from the Clinton Presidential Library involving Hillary’s “National Health Care Task Force.” Check out this transcript of Rush Limbaugh’s program where he praises Judicial Watch for uncovering and releasing the records. Conservative syndicated columnist Cal Thomas, meanwhile, suggested the records represented JW’s “biggest find of all (so far).” If you want to read the documents themselves, click here.
Judicial Watch Releases Shocking New Border Patrol Report on Mexican Government Incursions into the United States for Fiscal Year 2007
A couple of weeks ago, I shared with you a 2006 Border Patrol report highlighting incursions into the United States on the part of Mexican government officials, including armed members of the Mexican military. Now, we’ve got the latest information from 2007. And it is downright frightening.
The report, titled, “Mexican Government Incidents – 2007 Fiscal Year Report.” describes 25 confirmed incursions in 2007 along the U.S. – Mexican border involving Mexican military and/or law enforcement personnel. Among the incidents cited:
• MEXICAN MILITARY INCURSION (ARMED/INTENTIONAL) TUCSON/TUCSON – On April 23, 2007, Border Patrol Agents…reported a Mexican military incursion on the Tres Bellotas Ranch near Arivaca, Arizona. The agents were using night vision equipment and observed…seven to ten Mexican military personnel in Humvees carrying long arms…The agents continued to back away from the [soldiers] when they heard [one] soldier chamber a round into his rifle. The agents observed…that the military personnel had fanned out in a tactical formation on both sides of the US/Mexico International Boundary.
• MEXICAN MILITARY INCURSION (ARMED/INTENTIONAL) TUCSON SECTOR/SONOITA SECTOR – On July 5, 2007 a Border Patrol Agent…encountered six subjects dressed in tan colored BDU style clothing…A military style Humvee and a black Suburban were parked on the Mexican side of the border…Two of the subjects appeared to be carrying bundles of narcotics on their backs.
• MEXICAN POLICE INCURSION (ARMED/INTENTIONAL) EL CENTRO SECTOR/CALEXICO STATION – On August 26, 2007, Remote Video Surveillance System operators…observed a red Ford F150 south of the All American Canal between the United States and Mexico…Agents…encountered the vehicle and performed a vehicle stop…The agents found credentials on the driver indicating that [name redacted] is an Agent of the Mexican Agencia Federal de Investigation. The agents searched the vehicle and discovered several items to include: guns, ammunition, narcotics, night vision equipment, cell phones, a walkie talkie and a ski mask.
It appears the Bush administration had no intention of releasing this information to the public. Just like past Border Patrol reports of this nature, we had to file a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain them. And the Department of Homeland Security evaluated the information in the report as “For Official Use Only.” In my view this information must be made public. The American people should know the truth about the violence on the southern border so we can demand that our public officials take action.
Our sovereignty is being violated with impunity by Mexico and it must stop.
Immigration Round-Up: JW, America’s Toughest Sheriff to Tackle Illegal Immigration Street Crime
As regular readers of the Weekly Update will recall, Judicial Watch has been working together with Maricopa County (AZ) Sheriff Joe Arpaio to impose a law and order solution to the illegal immigration problem in Phoenix, Arizona. Last summer, Judicial Watch lodged a complaint with Sheriff Arpaio on behalf of small businesses, organized as the 36th and Thomas Business Coalition, who were victimized by illegal aliens regularly trespassing on their property. (Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon had abandoned the needs of Phoenix businesses, allowing the illegal immigration problem to spiral out of control.) Sheriff Arpaio, also known as “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” responded, leading to the arrest of six illegal aliens.
Now, with the help of Judicial Watch, small businesses in Phoenix called upon Sheriff Arpaio in a letter dated January 25, 2008, to tackle the problem of illegal immigration street crime.
When illegal aliens cross the border into the United States, they bring with them all manner of social problems, including trespassing, solicitation, loitering, drug dealing, sexual harassment, public urination and defecation. Unfortunately, the Phoenix Police Department routinely ignores the street crime problem, responding very selectively to only the most egregious crimes that simply cannot be ignored due to violence or loss of property. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Arpaio, is the only law enforcement agency enforcing both federal and state immigration laws in Arizona. The community letter reads in part:
“We call upon Sheriff Arpaio to restore law and order to this area. The policies and practices of the Phoenix Police Department are damaging our businesses, driving down home values and destroying our community. We’re tired of the political double-talk and excuses. We’re tired of being harassed and victimized. Sheriff Arpaio needs to take strong action to restore safety to our community.”
Sheriff Arpaio responded — big time. The sheriff’s posse saturated the neighborhood to enforce the law – including our nation’s immigration laws.
Sticking with the subject of illegal immigration, here is more good news according to the San Antonio Express News: “Realizing they were about to thrust the city smack into the middle of the national immigration debate, San Antonio leaders are now balking at the idea of opening a center for day laborers. Resurrected in the fall as a full-fledged project after more than two decades of inaction, the City Council was poised this month to consider a staff proposal to create a facility where workers, mostly undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America, could gather and be hired. After twice tabling the issue, a presentation scheduled for Tuesday was scrapped indefinitely by council members…”
Apparently, San Antonio officials had gotten word Judicial Watch was sniffing around and they decided to avoid the public pressure, investigation and any possible litigation by Judicial Watch and give up. Good decision.
Until next week…
Join the Fight!
We walk the walk. We don’t just complain about Clinton corruption – we sue and get documentation proving it. We don’t just complain about illegal immigration – we sue those public officials violating immigration law and force the government to reveal the documents about the crisis on our border. But we can’t walk the walk without you. If you like what we do to combat government corruption – and want more of it, please make a generous contribution to our work. Join the fight! You can (securely) donate here — http://www.judicialwatch.org/donate. Without strong public support for Judicial Watch — Hillary’s documents would still be sitting in Little Rock and government officials would undermine and violate our immigration laws with impunity.
